One of the best San Diego Zoo
June 13th 2008 06:19
San Diego Zoo is known as the best zoo in the US, possibly one of the best in the world. With one of largest selection of animals on display, it is one of the best I have ever visited.
The zoo began with a roar (literally) in 1916, when a number of animals were brought to Balbao Park San Diego to celebrate the opening of the Panama Canal. Local physician Harry Wedgeforth was driving through the park when he heard a roaring lion and thought that it would be great if San Diego had its own zoo. From there the zoo grew into an excellent research facility and home for endangered animals. The zoo tries to create a home that is as close as possible to the animal’s natural habitat.
There is a lot to see so it is a good idea to put the whole day aside if you can. If you want to see the Panda exhibit, I would head down there early morning as it is very popular and the queues can be horrendous later in the day. It was extra special for me when I was there in 2003, because a new panda had just recently been born in the zoo, and we got a chance to glimpse the new addition.
My favourites though had to be the Gorillas, it was the first time I had seen gorillas in a zoo. I did not realise how big, and muscular they were. It brings a completely new level of respect to Dian Fossey in the Gorillas in the mist.
If you are also planning to visit the LA theme parks, you should buy yourself the Southern Californian City Pass. You get a 3-Day Disneyland ticket, a 1 day ticket to Universal Studios, and SeaWorld and the choice of San Diego Zoo or the Zoo's Wild Animal Park, it is very good value for money!
San Diego Zoo is located just north of downtown San Diego 2920 Zoo Drive Balbao Park.
