A Helicopter Ride into the Grand Canyon
June 6th 2008 07:00
The Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA has been described as the eighth wonder of the world and it is not hard to see why. At one mile deep, 18 miles across, and 277miles, long it is an awe-inspiring sight.
We arrived there late in the afternoon just in time to see the magnificent fiery sky as the sunset over the canyon. We were there in February, which is the off-season and can be very cold but we did get accommodation in Grand Canyon Village. If you are planning to visit May – November accommodation can be booked up well in advance (up to a year a have been told), and if you are planning to drive to the canyon you need to be there are there by 8am in the summer months otherwise it is very difficult to get parking.
We took a forty-five minute helicopter ride into the Grand Canyon, which can be expensive, but worth every penny! Take a good camera, as you can get some fabulous shots. We went with Papillion Grand Canyon Helicopter Tours situated in Tusayan around five to six miles outside the park. We flew over the North Rim, Eastern Gorge, then below the rim into the canyon. We saw the beautiful rock formations in all their colourful glory, the amazing painted dessert and much more. It is hard to find the words to describe this amazing scenery awesome, fantastic or amazing, just do not seem powerful enough.
There are many other ways to experience the Canyon, such one of the many lookout points along the South Rim, you can hike or even take a mule ride into the Canyon.
However, you experience it I can guarantee you one thing you will never forget it.
