The Gas Lamp Quarter San Diego - History meets a good night out

June 17th 2008 00:30
For nearly 100 years, The Gas Lamp District in San Diego was one of the seediest areas in the city, full of brothels and pornographic picture theatres. Then in 1982 the area was redeveloped, all the beautiful Victorian architecture was lovingly restored to make it one of the most vibrant areas in the city today.

The area is now home to many sidewalk cafes, restaurants, bars and jazz clubs, making it one of the most happening nightspots in San Diego.

While there we chose to eat at a restaurant called Dicks Last Resort because we had heard so much about it. San Diego’s most influential people frequent it, and radio stations do special broadcasts live from it. It is known for its rude waiters that shout at you from across the table, encouraging napkin throwing and serving food in buckets. When we arrived we were shown to our table and the waiters tied enormous bibs around our necks. We ordered our food, which arrived in a bucket that was slammed down on the table in front of us. When I tried to discretely get the waiters attention to order another drink they shouted, “What do you want? Can’t you see I’m busy?” They don’t care if you are famous or sensitive they are equally rude to everyone. Personally, it is not my idea of a great night out, but many people really rave about it.

After dinner, we headed to a bar called Moose McGillycuddy’s, which is the only bar that would admit my underage friend. The drinking age is 21 in the US and all the bars card everyone including me who was well over 21. They will only accept local driver’s licences; so if you are not a resident of the US, make sure you carry your passport with you.
The bar was full of Marines and girls that liked marines and a few college kids, but the drinks were great the music was great and we had fun time dancing the night away!

It is also worth visiting the Gas Lamp Quarter during the day when you will find some fantastic galleries and shopping that will blow you away.
