I remember a few years ago in London seeing Nigel Havers, (who has starred in a lot of British TV) Roger Lloyd Pack (Only Fools and Horses and the Vicar of Dibley) and the guy that played the detective Vandervault (I can’t remember his name) performing in the play, ‘Art’ in London’s West End. It was so exciting to see three well-known actors performing live and me just three rows away from them.
Unfortunately for many Aussies and Kiwis the exchange rate is not our favour and going to a West End show can be an expensive business. Well don’t despair there are ways for you to some great West End Shows at heavily discounted rates.
One obvious one would be to take your student ID card or senior’s card and you get a discount, but for those of us that the boozy days of university are a distant memory but we still have a long way to go before we are drawing our pension there are still options open to us.
A visit to the Official Society of London Theatre’s ticket booth in Leicester Square on the day of the performance is one of the best ways to get discounted tickets, sometimes you can get up to 50% off the normal price. Unfortunately, if the show you wish to see is new or very popular they may not have any tickets available. The ticket booth is open Monday to Saturday 10am – 7pm and Sunday 12-3pm.
Another option to consider is going on preview night, which is usually a few days before opening night. This is the night actors fine-tune their performances in the West End Theatre, and the tickets can be significantly cheaper. To check out what is available go to www.whatsonstage.com.
The National Theatre on London’s South Bank also has standby tickets available up to two hours before a show.
